Summer has arrived, which means it’s ok to eat ice cream everyday (isn’t it?!), and of course, beach time.
We’re lucky to be surrounded by thousands of kilometres of beautiful coastline in Aotearoa; so we’ve compiled a list of some of the best beaches in New Zealand to get amongst this summer.
Pack your Talley’s Ice Cream into the chilly bin, get to the beach nearest you, and enjoy.
If you haven’t been to The Mount, have you even had a Kiwi Summer? This is the ultimate white sandy beach to hit up in the North Island. The perfect spot for summer picnics.
If you’re on the West Coast of the North Island, who could beat Waikanae and it’s beaches which extend almost all the way down the coastline to Wellington? Or, if you’re in Welly, where better than the golden sands of Oriental Bay? We can also highly recommend Scorching Bay near Miramar. Always a good spot for some sun, sand and swimming. If you don’t like sand in your ice cream, find a spot on the grass for your stash.
If you can make it past the beautiful bays of the Marlborough Sounds as you reach the South Island, make the turn-off between Picton and Blenheim to Whites Bay; where there’s ample space for camping, picnicking, sandcastle building or exploring. It’s a beaut.
Further around the Top of the South, you’ll reach the vast sands of Tasman Bay, starting at Tahuna Beach in Nelson, and extending right the way around to the Abel Tasman, where there’s so much beauty, and so much to do that you’ll wonder why you ever went anywhere else. You’ll also pass through the home of Talley’s Ice Cream, Motueka. We may be biased, but we reckon Kaiteriteri Beach is one of the best in NZ. The best advice we have? Get there with your ice cream supply, and don’t move all summer.
Further South our beautiful coastline continues. Kaikoura is open and as beautiful as ever, and if we’ve ever seen a backdrop for your beach picnic, it would definitely be the Kaikoura Ranges which stand so tall above the beautiful coastline. It’s completely, beautifully, New Zealand.
Sumner Beach in Christchurch is a beauty rain or shine, but makes a brilliant spot for a picnic in the summer months. Walk the pier, take the kids to the playground or make a splash in the water, there’s plenty to do between scoops of ice cream!
